The Belgians will apparently brew special beers to celebrate more-or-less anything: this one was created by Van Honsebrouck of Ingelmunster, better-known for the hefty Kasteelbier, in honour of the winner of the Belgian version of Big Brother, a blonde called Betty. My bottle came courtesty of Beer Barons. It's a truly blond, brewery-conditioned beer that pours lively with a slight head; the aroma is hoppy and phenolic with hints of fruit and vanilla cream. The vanilla quality continues to the palate which tastes surprisingly like ice cream; there's also plenty of tasty light malt, with a refreshing and slightly perfumed lime character. The hoppiness is well-balanced and persists in the finish which is largely tangy and fruity, with a very faint hint of banana and plums. This is a lively and cheerful beer with lots of flavour for a relatively low gravity, reminiscent of a British summer ale; even those, like me, who could think of few things less cheering than the TV programme that inspired it should find something to enjoy.
